Privacy Policy — NZ Lithium app

Last updated: 13 May 2026 Effective date: 13 May 2026

NZ Lithium Limited ("NZ Lithium", "we", "us", or "our") operates the NZ Lithium mobile application (the "App"). This policy explains what information the App accesses, how it is used, and the choices available to you.

Summary

The NZ Lithium App does not collect, transmit, or share any personal information automatically. All battery and device data stays on your phone or is transmitted only to hardware you own (your batteries, your ESP32 gateway) on your local Bluetooth or Wi-Fi network. We do not operate cloud servers. We do not have user accounts. We do not use analytics, advertising, or third-party tracking SDKs.

The only situation in which data leaves your device is when you choose to send us a bug report or a diagnostic export — see Section 2.

1. Information the App accesses

The App accesses the following on your device strictly to provide its core function (monitoring your batteries). In every case, the information either stays on your phone or is sent only to hardware that you own on your own local network. Nothing is sent to NZ Lithium or to any third party.

Bluetooth scanning and connection. Used to discover and communicate with your NZ Lithium batteries (JK BMS) and supported Victron devices. Bluetooth traffic stays between your phone and your battery — it does not leave your device.

Approximate and precise location (Android 11 and below only). Required by older versions of Android in order to scan for Bluetooth Low Energy devices. The App does not read your location, does not log it, and does not transmit it anywhere. On Android 12 and newer, this permission is not used.

Camera. Used solely to scan QR codes containing your Victron device encryption key, which you choose to share with the App. The camera is not used for any other purpose, and images are not saved or transmitted.

Local Wi-Fi network access. Used to communicate with your NZ Lithium Gateway (ESP32 device) if you own one. The gateway is on your local network, and all communication stays on that local network.

Run at boot, foreground service, and ignore battery optimisation. Used to keep the App's Bluetooth connection alive while you are monitoring a battery. No data is collected as part of this.

App settings. The names of batteries you have added, your preferences, and (if applicable) the IP address of your gateway are saved locally on your device so the App remembers your setup. This data stays on your phone.

2. Data you may choose to send us

The App contains two features that allow you to send information to NZ Lithium or a recipient of your choice. Both are entirely opt-in, user-initiated actions — nothing is sent unless you explicitly trigger it.

Bug Report (Settings → Bug Report). When you fill out the bug report form and tap Send, the App opens your email app with a pre-filled message addressed to sales@nzlithium.co.nz. The message contains the device model and description that you typed, plus your Android version and the date. You can review and edit the email in your email app before deciding whether to send it. If you do not tap Send in your email app, nothing reaches us.

Share Diagnostic Report (Battery menu → Share Diagnostic). This feature generates a plain-text summary of your current battery state and recent system log entries, and opens the Android share sheet. You choose where it goes — email, messaging app, cloud storage, or anywhere else. If you email it to us, we receive only what you chose to share.

We do not run any service that automatically receives data from the App. If you do not use these two features, no information reaches us.

3. Data sharing

We do not share data with anyone. If you choose to send us a bug report or diagnostic export, we use it only to investigate the issue you reported and do not pass it on to third parties.

4. Third-party services

The App does not use:

  • Analytics services (e.g. Google Analytics, Firebase Analytics)

  • Crash reporting services

  • Advertising networks

  • Push notification services

  • Cloud storage or sync services

  • Social login providers

5. Local data storage

The App stores the following on your device only:

  • Names and Bluetooth identifiers of batteries you have added

  • Your Victron device encryption keys (if you have entered them)

  • The IP address of your NZ Lithium Gateway (if used)

  • App preferences (theme, units, auto-reconnect settings)

This data can be cleared at any time by uninstalling the App or by clearing the App's data in Android Settings → Apps → NZ Lithium → Storage → Clear data.

6. Children's privacy

The App is intended for use by adults installing or maintaining lithium battery systems. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect any information from anyone.

7. Changes to this policy

If we update this policy, we will post the new version at this URL and update the "Last updated" date above.
